Making a House a Home — One Plant at a Time

A beginner’s guide to houseplants, indoor gardening, and how to keep your plants happy (even if you’re a little forgetful).

What’s the Easiest Plant to Keep Indoors?

If you’re just starting out, my top beginner-friendly picks are:

  • Pothos
  • Pilea Peperomioides
  • Angel Wing Begonia

These plants are forgiving, adaptable, and beautiful — perfect for new plant parents. Use our Grow Queen Aroid Soil Mix paired with our All-Purpose Organic Plant Food to set them up for success. Place them near a window with bright, indirect light, and they’ll thank you.

That said, your routine and lighting conditions matter. Grow Queen helps buffer the ups and downs of learning — especially when it comes to overwatering or underwatering. Still not sure? Where’s the Best Place to Put My Houseplants?

This is one of the most common struggles I see: we place plants where they look best — instead of where they’ll live best.

Here’s a general rule: ALL plants need light.
If you’re placing a plant in a room with no windows, it won’t thrive without a grow light or a grow bulb in a lamp. I’ve kept low-light plants alive in a windowless bathroom — but only with a light on them regularly.

If you’re lucky enough to have a big south-facing window, amazing! That whole room is likely plant heaven. Place sun-loving plants closest to the light source, and lower-light lovers farther back. The amount of sunlight a room gets should guide your choices — not just where you think a plant “looks cute.”

🌿 Bonus tip: Less light = slower growth = less water needed.
Don’t keep watering a plant that’s barely getting any light — it’s not drinking it up!

Why Are My Plant’s Leaves Turning Yellow?

Yellow leaves usually mean your plant is sending a distress signal — most often related to overwatering or under-watering.

If your plant seems stressed, adding a single serving packet of our All-Purpose Grow Queen (or a scoop from the 1 lb bag) can help buffer and balance the soil. It delivers complete nutrition and beneficial microbes to support recovery.

What’s a Pet-Safe Fertilizer I Can Use?

We get this question all the time — and it’s so important.

Many fertilizers on the market (like Miracle-Gro, Osmocote, and Jobe’s) are not pet-safe and often contain synthetic chemicals that can irritate or harm animals.

Grow Queen fertilizer and soil mixes are 100% organic and pet-safe. I once had a puppy I was dog-sitting eat three single-serve packets — he was completely fine! (Do I recommend it? No. But it's good to know they'll be okay.)

Our formula is non-toxic, odor-free, and made to be safe for homes with pets, kids, and curious little explorers.
