At Grow Queen, we believe that gardening isn’t just about feeding ourselves—it’s about nourishing our communities too. This season, we were fortunate to harvest more than enough from our garden, and we knew we wanted to share that abundance where it could make a real impact.
That’s why we donated 50 lbs of fresh, homegrown veggies to We Don’t Waste, a Denver-based nonprofit that rescues wholesome food and redistributes it to food pantries, shelters, and schools. Instead of being wasted, good food is redirected to families who need it most.
🌿 Why Giving Back Matters
Food insecurity affects millions of people across the U.S., including right here in Denver. At the same time, tons of perfectly good produce is thrown away every year. Nonprofits like We Don’t Waste bridge that gap—rescuing food before it’s discarded and ensuring it reaches those who can use it.
As gardeners, farmers, and plant lovers, we see firsthand how much care and energy goes into growing food. The idea of it going to waste feels wrong, especially when it could be nourishing someone in need.
🍂 A Season of Balance and Abundance
The timing of this donation feels especially meaningful as we approach the fall equinox—a moment of balance, when day and night are of equal length, and we reflect on the cycles of growth and harvest.
The equinox reminds us that abundance isn’t meant to be hoarded; it’s meant to be shared. Just as nature distributes seeds, nutrients, and light in balance, we can do the same in our communities. Donating our surplus harvest felt like a natural extension of that seasonal lesson—spreading nourishment where it’s most needed.
🥕 How We Can All Share the Abundance
Not everyone has 50 lbs of veggies to give away, and that’s okay. There are so many ways to help:
-
Gardeners: Even a small donation of extra tomatoes, greens, or herbs can make a difference.
-
Businesses: Local farms, shops, and restaurants can partner with nonprofits to donate surplus food.
-
Community members: Volunteering time or making a financial contribution helps organizations like We Don’t Waste continue their work.
Every little bit adds up—and together, we can create healthier, more resilient communities.
💚 Our Commitment
This donation is just one small step, but it reflects a bigger belief we hold at Grow Queen: abundance is meant to be shared. Whether it’s nourishing plants, ourselves, or our neighbors, we’re all connected.
We’re so inspired by the work We Don’t Waste is doing and encourage everyone—whether you’re a home gardener, a business owner, or simply someone who cares about food justice—to support your local food rescue organizations.
Final Thoughts
As the seasons shift and we move through the equinox, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what balance and abundance mean to us. For Grow Queen, it means caring for our plants, caring for ourselves, and caring for the community around us.
