This is an article on the top three mistakes and questions for houseplant parents.
Where is the best place to put my plant inside? 🏡
This is the most common error of new plant parents.
Everyone seems to want to put plants where they look the best instead of where they need to be. Depending on the plant you have, this will tell you where it will do best, but ALL HOUSEPLANTS NEED LIGHT!
Depending on the plant, they need a variety of light between low or indirect to full sun.
What houseplant do you have? Comment below and I will tell you where to put it!
If you get very little light in the room you want to put house plants, they might not do so well. Also fun tip - if the plants like less light typically means less watering.Â
A room with no windows, you will need to purchase a grow light or put a grow bulb into a lamp. I've grown low light plants in a bathroom with no windows - but I always had the grow light on them. If you have a giant south facing window - you’re set! Plants will love living inside anywhere in that room. If they are full sun lovers, closer to the window. If they like low light, further away somewhere else in the room. This is a good place to start.
If you want to help your plant out you can always use Organic Grow Queen plant fertilizer to help them out, plants like food just like us!Â
How much do I water my houseplant? đźš°
Generally, my rule of thumb (pun intended) is to water the soil when the plant is dry at least a finger amount way down the pot. If it's in a ceramic pot you can stick your finger in the soil to feel for moisture.
It's helpful for the plant to have drainage though, so consider keeping it inside a plastic pot but placing that inside the ceramic pot.
Grow Queen plant food and soil can also help with buffering over and under watering - ask us how.
How to re-pot a plant?
A plant can only grow as large as its container. There are some plants that like to be root bound, but thats another topic. When you see roots coming out the bottom of the pot or the plant itself is much bigger than when you first got it, its time to repot!
- Put down some newspaper or go outside with the plant, new pot, soil, a small shovel
- You will need to buy some SOIL - here is a great mix
- Get yourself a new (bigger) pot
- Add a little soil, and some Grow Queen Fertilizer to the bottom of the pot
- Take the plant out of the original pot - If its in a plastic pot, Turn the plant upside down and gently squeeze the sides. If it's in a ceramic only pot, use a fork, small shovel, butter knife, anything that can stick down the sides of the pot to loosen the soil.
- Loosen the roots so they stretch out, pinch poke and wiggle your fingers in the roots to help break them apart
- Put the plant in the new pot, sprinkle a little more Grow Queen
- Cover with soil until its full, press down to compact in in
- Water, slowly. Let the water run through, and then repeat until it drains all the way through
- Voila!
